Hopkins was 2 and 3 inches taller than Roy, Calzaghe, and Oscar. And had inches in reach on all of them as well. Speed and style bothered him more IMO. It’s clear because Oscar was generally unscathed after 8 rounds with Hop whereas Tito had already taken a pounding. Length just further makes things problematic for Hop as they would anybody.

None of those fights you mentioned seem comparable. Roy is Roy. There's nobody like him. His prime was a class of its own. Calzaghe, while obviously not Roy good, had a singular style. Canelo, Golovkin aren't doing that Enzo Calzaghe jazz boxing shit, throwing 80 punches a round. Oscar is the most comparable, and Hopkins knocked him out.

That's literally how Mayweather beat Canelo. Less rough, and with less size than Hopkins.

worth noting though, that was Canelo at 152, which seems unfathomable at this point, and Floyd is and always was better than Hopkins. The decisive speed advantage Floyd had isnt something Bernard would have. I wouldnt draw to many parallels here, but id pick Hopkins to win a boring semi competitive fight against Canelo.

Hopkins does not have Floyd speed, Canelo would have the quicker hands. Look, dont make him unbeatable, JT beat him twice but Canelo gets outclassed?? No :shaking-head-no-smiley-emoticon:  He lost his first fight, and has lost several more times after that.

Bernard was not "taking it easy" on Oscar, stop it. Thats before they were partners. He has problems with boxers who have quick hands, and arent brawlers.

Grube said the most comparable was Oscar, a former lightweight, who had been dropped before. Canelo is a sturdy dude who has never been dropped. Oscar was on even terms with Hop more or less at time of stoppage, its not unreasonable to think Canelo can mimick the same success minus the phantom quit job.

Canelo doesnt have quicker or better timed punches than a prime Hopkins. Quicker combinations maybe, which he only lands against smaller stationery targets. Canelo would be easy work for Hop.

Yea right. Was JT easy work for Hop?!

Canelo is nice bro. You guys need to show some respect. GGG rolling and stomping these guys left and right. he couldn’t even come close to hurting Canelo, and Cinnamon arguably won that fight.

I think it's unreasonable for a few reasons.

1. Oscar was bigger than Canelo. He's taller, wider, and has a longer reach. It doesn't matter what he sweated down to for years, he's naturally a bigger man than Canelo. Canelo isn't going to outbox a four inch taller Hopkins, who has a five inch reach advantage from the outside. It's not going to happen. Hopkins controls distance too well.

2. Oscar had much better footwork than Canelo. Any success Oscar had against Hopkins (and it was less than you're saying, Oscar won and a max of 3 rounds, and only 1 of the last 5 before being knocked out) was done with his footwork, which was much quicker than Canelo. Canelo has slow feet. Their handspeed is comparable, but Oscar's feet are much quicker. When Oscar made Hopkins miss, he was taken that half step back and shoeshining in return. Canelo's step back would be slower, and Hopkins would land more. Especially after Round 4, as Canelo is one of the few top fighters with worse stamina than Oscar.

worth noting though, that was Canelo at 152, which seems unfathomable at this point.

Also worth noting that Hopkins weighed 156 against De la Hoya. Hopkins actually had to sweat down more than Canelo.

Yea this was a shitty De La hoya, who was up on one card at time of stoppage, and Lederman had it 77-75 for Hopkins at time of stoppage.

Again, Hopkins was never the busiest fighter, even in his “prime” years. He just doesn’t let them go or throw combinations. He is there to be outworked, and he doesn’t necessarily look comfortable when he has to hunt down his prey. Canelo head movement and countering are much sharper than Oscars. So this would be a tit-for-tat fight..And Hopkins would not be able to hurt Canelo if GGG couldn’t. And Canelo has never been hurt or down

I don’t think you have ever understood what being naturally bigger means lol I think you once tried to argue Robert Guerrero was naturally bigger than James Kirkland or some shit like that. Canelo is bigger than oscar. That means weight/mass/size. The way you look at it, Hopkins is taller and longer than joe Frazier, so he’s the bigger guy?! Lmao

the disrespect or roy and hop smh.... ggg struggled with Jacobs and canelo...roy and hop fought at light heavy ggg was scaredofward at 168

So disrespectful, I feel you. Neither fight would have been close. Just think of what Canelo was able to do and then replace him with bigger, more intelligent, and faster fighters. GGG is too basic, would never connect clean enough to do damage to Roy or Hopkins. Great defense and counterpunching skills would make GGG look shit. These guys were masters of taking away their opponents offense and the only lost either one had in their prime was when they fought each other. GGG vs Tito would be a better matchup though. Better style for him.

You guys are putting them on a pedestal. Caught up in old school retro hype. Kinda like how when old timers say shit like Floyd would be no match for Willie pep or sandy saddler, shit like that.

Roy and Hop were not Floyd-level eliteness. That’s why they suffered plenty of losses and shown plenty vulnerabilities.

And I am mainly sticking to Hop because Roy’s time at 160 was short.

I’m coming with facts. Fact is, drag queen crack Oscar at 160, had success on hop. Her main Taylor who proved not to be shit beat him twice. Yet you guys say Canelo has no fuckin shot. Canelo just fought to a draw and never got hurt or dropped against the mighty GGG who is clearly the best middleweight since Hop. Canelo’s skills deserve more respect and I say he holds his own and can beat Hop..remember it’s about styles. You guys ain’t breaking it down by styles, just by emotions and personal opinions

My bad, I thought we were talking about in their physical prime. GGG could possibly make it close with the older versions of them but still lose either way. It takes more than a power hyped fighter to beat these caliber guys.
Floyd was smart enough to not fight as long as these guys or eventually he would have taken some Ls as well.

What advantages do GGG have against either guy? I believe he lasted so long because of the weak division he fights at. He didn't want any part of Ward at 168. Haven't seen enough from him to put him on the pedestal that you have him on.

This is my exact opinion. GGG has to achieve more. I need to see him achieve to the level of Hop and Roy, which means success moving up....before I give him a hypothetical nod.

They (Hop and Roy ) also had very weak competition for much of their careers. They were both ridiculed for it

i dont think success moving up means anything for whats being asked. a hypothetical fight takes place at 160, not 168 or 175.

For a one on one theoretical? I certainly think it does. Its a verification of skill.

Mayorga in his best days fought from 147 to 160. the physical ability to move up isnt a verification of boxing skill and ability.

Are you really comparing Mayorga to Roy and Hop? The ability to successfully move up is absolutely a verification of skill and ability. Do you really think otherwise? If so. Im going to walk away from this discussion. None of those guys successfully moved up.

Abraham became a gatekeeper. JT became a jail bird. Has anyone even seen Miranda??? shit all guys younger than Hop and Roy, and both guys moved up beyond them and outpaced. And validated their skills by doing so...by beating guys who had more punching power...with their other skills.

we only seen ggg vs 4 guys who can punch drew with 1 arguably lost 2 Jacobs. taylor miranda pavlik all were bigger could punch and can jab. how does ggg handle getting punched by them? we not talking bout euro guys who cant punch nor guys moving up from 154 either.

JT and Kelly also had drug issues and by GGGs age were already out the sport. I think he wrecks them both

prolly would. But how does he handle getting hit by bigger guys who can punch consistently? Jacobs the only one he faced and he arguably lost.
