By Derek Bonnett

In his autobiography, Benjamin Franklin observed the power of self-reflection as a means for self-improvement. The examination of our shortcomings can unearth myriad problems within the ways we live our lives, but the very process can also serve to aggravate old wounds. Professional fighters make endless mistakes in and out of the ring. Just like most people, they can often pinpoint one moment in their lives which forged a very different path than the one they had anticipated or, at least, hoped for. From the great Billy Conn, who nearly upset Joe Louis for the Heavyweight Championship of the World, to the brave Meldrick Taylor, who knows painfully well how two seconds can change a lifetime, professional prizefighters of all eras and level of status speculate how things could have been different. This process of self-reflection can be brutal.

Especially for the unheralded.

I know who the top one or two junior flyweights in the world should be. After that it's getting harder and harder to sort these guys out. Ivan Calderon remains unbeaten, so he's the top dog with wins over Hugo Cazares and Rodel Mayol. Giovanni Segura checks in at second since he's been on a nice streak since avenging his lone defeat to Cesar Canchila. In that time, he's added the pelts of the previously ranked Canchila, Juanito Rubillar, and Sonny Boy Jaro. All by stoppage.

Teens growing up in troubled neighborhoods often find themselves drawn into seedy situations against their will. Whether it is peer pressure, or a feeling of despair for the future, many of today's youth fall prey to the allures of gangs, violence, and drugs. One of the most effective ways to circumvent this calamity is by making sure these kids stay active in after-school programs.

One of the best activities for children and teens to participate in are the fitness programs held in their schools or local gyms. There are neighborhood fitness centers like these all across the nation. Their success stories never cease to inspire. Whether it is boxing, basketball, or badminton, studies have shown that after-school activities dramatically lower incidence rates of violence and crime amongst teens.

Anyone who made it a point to view professional prizefighting throughout the 1980s and 1990s surely spent some time listening to Sean O'Grady and Al Albert call USA's Tuesday Night Fights. During two decades of boxing coverage TNF treated fans to copious bouts spotlighting the comebacks of Roberto Duran, George Foreman, and Larry Holmes. Also, fans were exposed to the likes of Arturo Gatti, Oscar De La Hoya, Roy Jones Jr., and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

However, USA's weekly boxing series, which was at one time the longest continually running boxing shows on television, also treated us to some lower profile commodities in boxing. It was there boxing fans witnessed Tracy Harris Patterson's title winning second round KO of Thierry Jacob, Tyrone Trice's chilling one round blowout of Ron Collins, and Michael Moorer's first visit to the canvas against TNF regular Everett "Bigfoot" Martin.

In spite of a number three IBF ranking, it's been a slow return to title contention for Raul Martinez. Twelve months have passed since "Cobra" was dropped and stopped by Nonito Donaire in an unsuccessful bid for the IBF Flyweight title. In that time, Martinez, 28, has added two victories to his dossier over tune-up type opposition and watched a title shot against Vic Darchinyan at 115 pounds fall apart before his eyes.

Throughout the most prominent eras in professional boxing, the featherweight division has consistently produced elite caliber competitors not "in single spies, but in battalions." From Willie Pep to Alexis Arguello, right on down to Salvador Sanchez and Naseem Hamed, the 126 pound class matched these hall of famers with Sandy Saddler, Ruben Olivares, Wilfredo Gomez, and Marco Antonio Barrera.

Today's featherweights are a fine lot of fighters from all over the world. The elite are comprised of Indonesia's Chris John, Puerto Rico's Juan Manuel Lopez, Panama's Celestino Caballero, and Cuba's Yuriorkis Gamboa. On the periphery, we have Mexico's Cristobal Cruz and Elio Rojas of Dominican Republic origin. While none of these combatants measures up to the aforementioned greats, the potential match-ups between each produces a rabid salivation around the mouths of boxing aficionados the world over.

Open letter to Top Rank: Antonio Margarito PDF Print E-mail
Written by Brian Bogart

Top Rank, Inc.:

With the re-emergence of Antonio Margarito, it looks like the entire Top Rank banner is about to face a serious question of morality.

Whoever is reading this e-mail has got to believe deep down, whether you want to or not, that Margarito, given his heinous crime (and yes, it WAS heinous) should be either banned for life or thrown behind bars. Now I know that Big Boss Bob has said that in law school he learned to not separate a man from his livelihood without a shred of evidence, but isn't the plaster on his hands evidence enough? Wasn't that the evidence that resulted in a year long ban?
